No data is collected, transmitted, or shared. The app has no network capability, no accounts, no analytics and no third-party components. Nothing you do in it reaches us or anyone else.
What the app reads
Smart Charging reads the AppleSmartBattery hardware sensor
present in every Mac laptop. That includes delivered wattage, the negotiated
voltage and current, battery charge level, temperature, cycle count and
health. It also lists processes using significant CPU, so a power deficit
can be attributed to what is causing it.
All of this is read locally, from your own machine, and displayed to you.
What is stored, and where
To report battery trends over time, the app keeps a local history of readings in:
~/Library/Application Support/SmartCharging/
This file stays on your Mac. It is never uploaded. Deleting the app's
Application Support folder removes it permanently, and the Homebrew
zap command does so automatically.
What the app does not do
- No network requests of any kind
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or usage measurement
- No accounts, sign-in or identifiers
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers
- No access to files, documents, contacts, location, camera or microphone
- No data shared with third parties, because none is collected
Verifying this yourself
You do not have to take our word for it. The complete source is published under the MIT licence at github.com/bluehawana/mac-smartcharging-monitor, and can be read or built yourself.
You can also confirm the behaviour directly: monitor the app in Activity Monitor's Network tab, or point Little Snitch or LuLu at it. There is nothing to see, because it never opens a connection.
Children
The app is a hardware utility that collects no data, so it presents no particular risk to children and requires no age-related handling.
Changes
Should this policy ever change, the revision will be published on this page and recorded in the project's public commit history.
